Bourbon Gift Guide: $30, $75, and Splurge
June 30, 2026 · 5 min read
Buying whiskey for someone else is mostly a question of how much you know about their taste. Here is how the three price tiers actually differ, so you can pick without guessing at a proof number.
Around $30: the bottle they will finish
At this price you are buying a well-made everyday bourbon, and that is a genuinely good gift for someone who mixes old fashioneds or drinks with a cube. Buffalo Trace, Old Forester 86 and Woodford Reserve all land here and all behave well in a cocktail.
Pick the softer, lower-proof end if you have no idea what they like. A 100-proof pour can read as harsh to someone who mostly drinks wine.
Around $75: the step-up sipper
This is the sweet spot for a real present. You are paying for more age or higher proof, and it shows: deeper oak, dried fruit, more length on the finish. Michter's US*1 and a small-batch or single-barrel bottling fit this tier, as does a bonded rye if they like a spicier pour.
If they already own a shelf of bourbon, this is where a rye or a wheated bourbon makes a better gift than another Kentucky staple — it gives them something they do not have.
Splurge: allocated and hard to find
Names like Eagle Rare, W.L. Weller, E.H. Taylor and Blanton's move on allocation, which means distributors release small quantities on no fixed schedule. Availability changes week to week and store to store — the honest answer is to call or ask at the counter rather than trust a listing you saw online.
If the allocated bottle you wanted is gone, a well-chosen 12-year single malt or an XO cognac lands with the same weight. The gift is the quality in the glass, not the label on the hunt list.
The part people forget
Two heavy rocks glasses turn any of the three tiers above into a complete gift, and they cost less than moving up a price band. A pair of large ice molds does the same job.
Skip novelty flavored bottles as a gift unless you know they like them. And if you are not sure, ask us — we would rather point you at the right $40 bottle than sell you the wrong $90 one.
