Classic Homemade Eggnog (and How to Spike It)
November 19, 2026 · 5 min read
Store-bought eggnog is fine. Homemade eggnog is a revelation. It is creamy, warmly spiced, and easier than you think, and it gives you full control over how it is spiked. Here is the classic, plus the spirits that do it justice.
What you need
For about 6 servings:
- 4 egg yolks
- 1/3 cup sugar
- 2 cups whole milk
- 1 cup heavy cream
- 1 tsp vanilla
- Fresh nutmeg
- Bourbon, aged rum, or brandy to spike
How to make it
Gently does it:
- Whisk yolks and sugar until pale.
- Warm the milk with a little nutmeg, then temper it into the yolks.
- Return to low heat and stir until slightly thickened, do not boil.
- Cool, then stir in cream and vanilla.
- Chill, then spike each glass and grate fresh nutmeg on top.
Bourbon, rum, or brandy?
Bourbon brings warmth and vanilla. Aged rum leans rich and tropical. Brandy is the traditional, mellow choice. Many people use a mix of two. Start with about 1 to 1.5 oz per serving and adjust to taste.
