The Perfect Michelada, San Antonio Style

September 17, 2026 · 4 min read

If a cold beer and a hot San Antonio day had a baby, it would be a Michelada. Part beer, part cocktail, all refreshment, it is the drink you want for game day, a backyard cookout, or a lazy Sunday. Here is the Full Proof Liquor take, chili-salt rim and all.

What is a Michelada?

A Michelada is a Mexican beer cocktail: a light lager built up with lime, savory and hot sauces, and a chili-salt rim. Every family has their own version. This is a solid, crowd-pleasing base you can dial in to taste.

What you need

Grab these:

  • 1 cold Mexican lager (Modelo, Pacifico, or Tecate)
  • 1 oz fresh lime juice
  • 2 to 3 dashes hot sauce (Valentina or Cholula)
  • 2 dashes Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 dash Maggi or soy sauce (optional, for umami)
  • Tajin or chili-salt for the rim
  • Ice

How to make it

Under five minutes:

  • Rim a pint glass with a lime wedge, then dip it in Tajin or chili-salt.
  • Fill the glass with ice.
  • Add the lime juice, hot sauce, Worcestershire, and optional Maggi.
  • Top slowly with the cold beer and stir gently.
  • Garnish with a lime wedge and enjoy.

Tips and variations

Want it more like a cocktail? Add a splash of Clamato for a fuller chelada with body. Prefer it cleaner? Skip the Worcestershire and let the lime and chili lead. Feeding a crowd? Mix the lime and sauces in a small pitcher and let everyone top with their own beer.
